How Trauma Lives in the System

Unresolved trauma and unprocessed emotional experiences often live within the system long after the event has passed. When the present triggers these old experiences, the nervous system can react as if there were danger. This is not a conscious response, but a protective pattern within the body that can result in:

  • Survival: Moving into fight, flight, freeze, or fawn.

  • Inner Imbalance: Feelings of tension, contraction, or disconnection.

  • Emotional Overwhelm: A sense of losing your inner safety.

Why Therapy Needs Both Mind and Body

Lasting healing requires an integrated approach. While cognitive therapy brings awareness to your patterns, it doesn't always release the tension held in the nervous system. At the same time, working only with the body without reflection can leave the deeper meaning of an experience unprocessed. This makes it difficult to bring lasting change and the system may then return to familiar protective patterns.
